The Schafer household has had a fabulous Fall. We've been hiking, had Josh's Mom out to visit, built a coffee table, finished the mantle and the living room, went to the Apple Cup (outcome irrelevant), and gotten in one day of skiing. We were so busy having a great time that we completely forgot about our withouts.
October - Coffee: Ha! Without coffee...that didn't happen at all. In all honesty, this may have been a very strong subconscious desire to continue drinking my daily morning coffee, that allowed me to conveniently forget about my without for the month. Josh and I both failed miserably, but at least we were caffeinated.
Josh: 31
Kristina: 31
November - Chips and Sweets: This would have been an excellent month for me to remember my without. I could have done it. I should have done it. I was so in the habit of not thinking about the withouts, that I genuinely forgot.
Josh: 30
Kristina: 30
Forgetting is expensive. Good thing it all goes to charity!
December is about avoiding popular radio. I will go without listening to the radio, when it is in my control (I'm not going to penalize myself for being in someone else's car, or at the Grocery) for the entire month of December. NPR is allowed, Slacker and Pandora radio are allowed. The general FM stations are not.
The purpose of this is to help me maintain my Christmas Spirit. I don't watch much TV so the radio is my biggest exposure to relentless advertising. Last year I got pretty cranky listening to the same commercials telling me to buy random crap to make the people I love happy. I am going to buy gifts for the people I love because I think it will make them happy, not because Snow Mom tells me to or because Radio Shack has great deals on remote car starters.

September - NO COMPLAINING
September 10: I've made it a habit to not bring my work home, and I rarely talk to Josh about the details of my day. But, today was a very bad day and I couldn't help myself. I needed to vent, and it was worth a dollar!
September 11: Josh and I have been getting up a couple mornings a week to run before work. This morning was very difficult for Josh, so much so, that we've decided to classify his grumpy protestations as complaining. He owes a dollar.
The rest of September we did really well. We didn't keep track super well, but September was a very positive month.
Final Tally:
Josh: 1
Kiki: 2

August - Spending Money on Anything that is Not Fresh Food
I kept track of this month as a running list, so I'm going to leave it this way for the post.
August 1: No purchases!
August 2: Quiet night at home - no purchases!
August 3: Mud Run! We did good, only purchasing food and gas. I'm going to classify gas as food for the car, so we are ok on that one!
August 4: I went to the Rennaissance Faire, I got my hair braided and it was crazy hot so I bought an umbrella for shade. See? Totally worth it!
August 5: I developed the pictures from the Mud Run. This was something that needed to happen, but it still counted.
August 6-8: Success! Josh worked on the trim in the living room and I cleaned up the house.
August 9: I neglected to plan for a baby shower (we are so excited for the Bressler's!) so I went to Babies R Us and purchased a Bumbo floor seat. Josh could only call it the Bimbo and didn't really get it. I'm not sure I get it either, but we are DINKYs.
August 10: I went to the Rennaissance Faire again. I loved it and I just had to go back. This time I brought Leonard! Josh went to the hardware store for more trim materials.
August 11: I went to the baby shower, while Josh worked on the house.
August 12-15: No purchases.
August 16: Belle was in town - pedicures and manicures were a must
August 17-19: Camano weekend - we spent lots of money, but all of it was on food and beverages so no increase to the tally! As usual we had a fabulous time :)
August 20: We bought blinds. Add one for both of us. I'll make sure and post about that when we get them installed...its not as easy as it sounds.
August 21-25: No purchases
August 26: My Uncle Brian was in a band (The Runaway Trains) for a long time, and now that the band members have all moved away, they will occasionally do a reunion show. They had a reunion on August 31 and since his birthday is in September I decided to put a poster together for him. It was worth paying an extra dollar for! I think he really enjoyed it and I had fun making it. Its their single layed out into a poster. The Have You Seen These Trains, was part of the insert in the album.
August 27-31: We did it! Here's a cool picture my Dad's girlfriend took of us at my Uncle's gig. Slim's Last Chance is an excellent small outdoor venue and we loved every minute of it!
At the end of the night Brian got up on stage with the Seven Screaming Diz Busters and did a cover of Blue Öyster Cult's "The Red and The Black". The video is a bit wonky but check it out!
So did we learn anything from this month's without? Maybe a little. I learned there are certain things that are 100% worth it, and I also learned that I can go without the pink flamingo at Target that catches my eye for $1. He's is trashy and adorable, but he doesn't need to come home. There is probably a much broader life lesson to be gleaned from that statement...but I'll leave it alone!

Sexy v. Skanky
I saw this over on Weighty Matters as the Funny Friday video and its too good not to repost here. I watched the Miley Cyrus "performance" video with Josh and we were both horrified by it. The objections I've read about the "performance" are that it was too sexual, and that Miley is a terrible twerker. Can I even use twerk that way? Anyway, my point is that I don't find either of those things to be the issue.
My problem with it is this: She acts like a classless, immature, idiot with no stage presence. There is absolutely nothing sexy about what she did at the MTV video music awards. It was gross! You can be sexy without being disgusting. Put your tongue back in your mouth! And, as a performance artist, you should be able to hold the audience's attention without holding a foam phallus on your hoo ha.
But, to her credit...I am talking about her and that was certainly the point. Check out how the crew of the Enterprise likes the show.
And for comparison, here is an example of a sexy performance.
And that is the difference between who you bring home to the family and who you leave at the truck stop.
Happy Friday Everyone!

Run-A-Muck
A few months ago I mentioned to my Dad that we were doing another mud run. See previous post "The Dirty Dash - Sloppy Seconds". He told me there was a mud run in Port Angeles called the Run-A-Muck coming up, and suggested that Josh and I run it. I said "Only if you run it with us". I knew he had a sense of adventure, and he didn't let me down! We got a great crew together of my Dad, Karen, Josh, my sister Kelsey, and I. Here we are - ready to get muddy!
Josh getting his stretch on.
Kelsey wasn't feeling well, and we weren't sure if she was up to frolicking in the mud. We got this picture right before the run started, This is the saddest face I've seen on anyone who is about to jump in a mud puddle.
She's a tough chick and she perked up enough to power through the run with us.
First thing's first - get chased by a 4-wheeler through a giant puddle!
Time to get muddy - over and under the logs, rolling through the mud. And yes, Dad is wearing a skirt!
They had a water truck setup to spray us while we went through the logs. It made for some awesome photos!
Kelsey isn't sure what to think about our first foray into real mud.
This is my fourth mud run, so I really shouldn't be surprised anymore by how cold the mud is. Yet, somehow, I am. It just doesn't get old - maybe its why I love mud runs so much!
My favorite obstacle is always the slide. Here is Kelsey demonstrating the best way to do it. Face first!!
...And here is me demonstrating what it looks like after you've landed in the water and are completely covered in mud.
The bad thing about this slide was that the plastic sheeting they used wasn't very slippery, so they squirted everyone down with Dawn before we slid down. It made for a fun slide, but it tasted nasty, and we all had blurry vision after we got out of the pool. Dad and I are just starting to feel the effects of the Dawn.
The area where we had the run was nicely forested. We had lots of spots where we could enjoy the scenery. It was broken up with mud tunnels, concrete obstacles to climb, and cargo nets. Sorry for the blurry picture, we brought a waterproof camera and it was hard to keep the lens clean! We must have climbed at least 5 or 6 nets just like this one.
Near the end of the run there was a pretty sweet photo op on top of a pile of rocks. We look dirty, tired, and happy. I think that pretty much captures how we felt!
The final obstacle was a mud pit about 6 inches deep, with a cargo net spread over the top. Aren't cargo nets supposed to be suspended over the obstacle? Not this one, it hung down into the mud so you had to push to keep it up and keep moving. Kelsey and I had a rough time getting through it. We were both hollering the whole way, and had everyone around us laughing.
The net kept catching on my ponytail, and slowing me down. It didn't help that we had reached the point of non-stop laughter, and neither of us could stop giggling.
Josh got through it with much more skill, he still had the giggles though.
Dad and Karen got through it too. I think Karen's popeye shirt was the perfect attire. I'm not sure if Dad is loving it, but Karen certainly has the giggles!
Kelsey, Josh, and I - after the final mud pit.
Here is another one of the three of us after we rinsed off in the pool we started in. It kinda worked...
I thought about getting a kiss from Josh, but we decided on the air kiss instead.
Dad and Karen after the run - I think they had fun, I bet they'll join us on the next one!
After I finish a mud run, I feel super-tough. The flex pose happens a lot!
My "little" sister and I.
Another successful mud run! We are definitely signing up for more, and we are thinking about doing a longer one next year. Maybe the Warrior Dash? As always the invitation is open, we would love for you to play in the mud with us!

Happy Post!
Josh and I have had a fabulous summer and even though its winding down, we had an excellent time and its not over yet!
You know that feeling you get on a Friday afternoon when you are done with work and off to enjoy a phenomenal weekend? I've gotten to enjoy that feeling a whole bunch this summer, and I hope you have too. I found this clip today of some cows excited for a green pasture and in this moment I completely understand these cows.
Has anyone seen the show Wilfred? It is wildly inappropriate and hilarious. Elijah Wood believes that his neighbor's dog, Wilfred, is like a real person who talks to him. If you aren't a dog person I'm not sure you would find it as funny as I do. It is definitely an adult show and definitely worth a shot.
Josh and I have always said that Leonard is kind of a stubborn jerk. Its why we love him - he is our stubborn jerk. To be fair its just a part of his personality, there is a lot of good stuff in there too, but the attitude is what really makes him Leonard. Case in point: Every meal since he was a puppy he has to get in his kennel and sit before he can eat. Getting in the kennel is no problem at all, but we have to stand there and make him sit because he challenges us on the sitting part. Every. Time. Anyway, Wilfred is a jerk too and it makes the show even better for me. Another example: adorable pic of Leonard.
The story behind this is that he attacked the flower vase I had just sprayed for bugs and set on the back porch to dry, he stole a sunflower, then played keep away with it. Love him anyway.
Jen over at Epbot posted this and I just can't help myself, I have to share. I've always loved this song, it makes me want to dance! It looks like these people agree.
Ain't nothing wrong with a little safety dance. Only thing I was missing was a Bio-Dome clip!
Alright, one last clip, these have gone viral so you may have already seen them. This is my favorite of the bunch and it makes me laugh every time I watch it. Its two grown men re-enacting conversations between one of them (the father) and his two year old girl. The barrette is what really brings the whole thing together.
This has become one of our favorite things to apply to real life.
Me: "Do you think we could fit one more weekend of camping in this summer?"
Josh: "We have a lot to get done on the house, we should really have at least one weekend at home."
Me: "Yes, but maybe we can have one more weekend of camping?"
Josh: "Do you want me to just manifest more weekends?!"
It applies to more situations than I would have thought possible, and it makes us giggle. Even when we're the only ones who get the joke.

July - The Snooze Button...again
Maybe its the summer. Maybe its that we are mid-way through the year and are in a New Year's Resolution slump. Maybe its the super comfy new sheets and down comforter. Or maybe we are just feeling lazy.
Whatever it is, we didn't do very well at avoiding the snooze button this month. We did better than we have been, which is to say that Josh got into the habit of hitting the snooze button 3x-4x rather than every day, and I snoozed once or twice instead of two or three times a week. So, the idea of the "without" is still working but...its a big tally.
Josh: 18
Kristina: 9

The Dirty Dash - Sloppy Seconds
Josh and I did the Dirty Dash, for the second year in a row. It was just as much fun as last time! This year Sean and Laura, and Laura's friend Jenny ran it with us. I think 5 is just about the perfect number for a mud run, and we all had a blast!
The Before Picture. We went with an 80's theme.
Josh and Sean with their pre-run stretch routine.
I don't know how Laura managed this pic - but she nailed it!
The first mud pit. It was so cold, it stunk, and for a minute I was worried I thought I might have to swim it!
Getting muddy!
The organizers set up a mud pit with pvc pipes under the water. They had people on the side who would push a button and send a puff of air through the pipes. The result was explosive mud - pretty intense!
The three ladies rockin' our Dirty Dash Tattoos! Looking at this picture later is silly....there is so much more going on than just us!
This is me after the air puff mud explosion pit. I wasn't enjoying it nearly as much as Josh.
There were lots of muddy walls to climb over. The mud made them extra slippery
The beer station. You can see the giant slip and side in the background.
You reach a level of muddiness where everything is hilarious. Toward the end, I couldn't stop giggling. .
The After Pic
Josh and Kiki after picture
This one properly captures how exhausted we were.
We had a blast and we will definitely sign up for round three next year. As it stands right now, we are doing a mud run in Port Angeles on August 3! My Dad, and my sister will be running with us, so it should be extra fun!

Boston
On April 3, I decided I needed a visit to Belle. The summer was getting
super busy, and I needed to visit her before her assignment in Boston was up. She is a traveling nurse so I do most of my sightseeing around the country by taking trips to see her - Phoenix, Tuscon, San Diego, and now Boston!
I flew the red eye in to Boston, and since Belle was working the night shift, her friend Shari was happy to pick me up. I asked the woman who I'd never met before if she was there to pick me
up, we hugged, I hopped in her car, and she put up with my delirious
self for the next several hours. You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep, Belle surrounds herself with good people and Shari is no exception. Thanks Shari!
I took a picture of the first thing I saw that would prove to Josh I made it to Boston.
I was still pretty out of it because of the red eye, and Belle worked the night shift so she was exhausted too. We bought coffee, apparently Dunkin' Donuts is the Starbucks of the East, took Dakota for a walk and then we took a nap. It felt like college.
She is lucky enough to be close to the Harvard Arboretum. There was a great path to follow and there were beautiful trees all over to enjoy the weather with.
That evening we went out to dinner with a bunch of Belle's coworkers and saw an improv show at Improv Asylum. I can see how improv isn't for everyone, but these folks were great. They changed it up all the time, and we were genuinely LOLing. They took a lot of audience input, my favorite being the bachelorette who volunteered for a skit. She was in school to be a doctor, marrying a guy in school to be a doctor, and they got engaged in a convertible, and something about her parent's vacation home on a lake. It practically wrote itself. The improv actors were merciless, and hilarious.
The next day was all about seeing the city. So, in true East Coast fashion...I took my first subway ride!
We did the Boston Duck tour. The Boston Duck is completely different from the Seattle Duck. Everyone in Boston that I talked to about it mentioned how cool the tour was supposed to be. It was a super neat way to see the city, we had an informative, funny tour guide, and they didn't make us use kazoos like the Seattle Ducks. Aside from being a fun touristy experience, from what I understand the Boston Duck Company is very involved in local community and charity. And the best part...they let us drive!!
Despite the angle, I am not actually about to run us into the bridge.
We got our nails done on Newbury street. We stopped at the grocery on our way and found single serve, foil topped glasses of wine. Of course those made it inside the nail shop.
From there we were off to explore the rest of downtown. We stopped at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Windows were still boarded up and a memorial was growing. About 2 hours after I took this pic, we walked by again and the memorial had at least tripled in size.
We made our way to Faneiul Hall. We got recruited to help a team complete a scavenger hunt, so we participated (poorly) in a 20 second aerobics class right in the square in front of Faneuil Hall.
Boston is beautiful. I loved looking around at all the buildings. Here on the West Coast we just don't have the obvious history in each structure that you see over there.
I mean really...this is a parking garage!
Belle and I went out to dinner at a delicious Italian restaurant. While we were enjoying our meal, a couple came up to us, said "next round's on us, KCCO", and set this on the table!
KCCO means Keep Calm, Chive On. The Chive is an awesome website that Josh and I love. I was wearing my KCCO shirt that day, and the couple must have noticed and been fans too! Check out The Chive!
That night we went out on the town, went to an oyster bar, checked out a great cover band, and met up with some of Belle's other friends. It was an excellent night!
On my last day in town I had to touch the Atlantic.
Check out this tide. This is a video of the tide flowing into a little cove, I couldn't believe it so I had to take a video.
The Boston Stereotype of their accent is totally true! People say "wicked" in actual conversation. They really do drop their "r's". I just about died when one of Belle's friends said "Havahd? Those suckahs are wicked smaht".
It was a fantastic trip. Can't wait to find out where I get to visit Belle next!
